A new title in the popular BioShock video game series is planned, but it won’t go on sale for several years, publisher 2K Games said on Monday.
The BioShock franchise, which includes BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite, is a first-person person shooter game that immerses players in a fictional past in 1912, the late 1950s, and 1960. It has received praise for its high-concept narrative, which weaves in the ideas of Ayn Rand, George Orwell, along with the notion of American exceptionalism.
The games, which were published from 2007 to 2013, have been a big hit with a combined 33 million copies shipped as of February 2019. BioShock is among the top-selling brands for parent-company publisher 2K, whose other popular games include NBA 2K, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and Sid Meier’s Civilization.
The upcoming BioShock game, which is still unnamed, will be developed by 2K studio Cloud Chamber. Cloud Chamber is a new studio within 2K Games that was announced on Monday along with the new BioShock game.
Hoagy de la Plante, Scott Sinclair, and Johnathan Pelling, who have all worked on previous BioShock games, are now at Cloud Chamber, Cloud Chamber head Kelley Gilmore told gaming news site IGN. However, Kevin Levine, who created the franchise and Irrational Games and led the development of the two initial games, is not part of the project and continues leading another 2K Games studio, Ghost Story Games.
“BioShock is one of the most beloved, critically praised, and highest-rated franchises of the last console generation [according to Metacritic],” 2K president David Ismailer said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge.”
