Girl Scout Cookie Prices Are Going Up in 2020

Get ready to pay S’more for your annual fix of Girl Scout cookies.

More chapters of the Girl Scouts of America have announced an across the board price increase for its most popular fundraiser, with each box now costing $1 more. For most varieties, that works out to a 25% increase.

Thin Mints, Do-Si-Dos and the newly introduced Lemon-Ups will now run $5, while specialty cookies (S’mores and the gluten-free Toffee-tastic) will run $6. The organization says the move was necessitated by increasing bakery costs and higher expenses to provide programming for the scouts, among other things.

The roll-out of Lemon-Ups didn’t hurt either.

“After careful consideration, reviewing and planning, the council decided that the 2020 Girl Scout Cookie season was the optimal time to make the increase in conjunction with the release of a new Girl Scout Cookie,” the Girl Scouts Heart of the South, which oversees 111 regional councils and 2.7 million members, said in a statement. “Historical data shows that when a price increase is introduced with the release of a new Girl Scout Cookie, the possible decrease in sales can be offset by the excitement of the new cookie.”

Prices are also increasing in Texas.

Officials acknowledge the price increase could scare off some customers, but say it will help the organization avoid multiple price increases in the future.

Some Girl Scout troops have been charging the higher rate for a while now, some as far back as 2015. But the last large-scale price increase for Girl Scout cookies came in 2015, when boxes rose from $3.50 to $4.

Girl Scout cookies go on sale at slightly different times depending on location. To find out when you can place this year’s order, a tool on the Girl Scout Website lets you enter your zip code to get the precise date – and location of sales booths.
