Samsung on Tuesday unveiled three new flagship phones in the Galaxy S20 line, plus a new smaller folding phone called the Galaxy Flip. The company also used the occasion, its annual Unpacked event in San Francisco, to introduce upgraded earbuds called Galaxy Buds Plus.
The Galaxy S20 phone
Surprising no one, Samsung unveiled the latest phones in its flagship Galaxy line that includes three models.
The S20, which costs $1,000, includes a 6.2-inch screen. The slightly higher-end S20 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen and a starting price of $1,200. Meanwhile, an even larger model, the S20 Ultra, comes with a 6.9-inch screen, even better cameras, and a starting price of $1,400. The screens for all three use OLED HDR+ displays at a 120Hz refresh rate to make moving images and games appear sharper.
All three phones also will be fully compatible with new, faster 5G wireless networks. The phones will be available for pre-order on Feb. 21 and ship on March 6.
All three phones can record video in 8K resolution. The two smaller phones have lenses with three-times optical zoom and 30X zoom using digital software. The camera on the Ultra has a 10X optical zoom pushed to 100 times with digital software.
The Galaxy Z Flip phone
First unveiled in a commercial during the Super Bowl, the Galaxy Z Flip is a smartphone with a 6.7-inch screen that folds in half. That allows the phone to fit more easily in a pocket while still featuring a large screen comparable to those of other smartphones.
The Flip, which has a hinge that Samsung said is designed to last for hundreds of thousands of opening and closings, goes on sale Feb. 14 for almost $1,400.
Galaxy Buds Plus
Samsung also had a new version of its popular earbuds that debuted last year. But instead of the five or six hours of play time like the original, the new model will last for 11 hours on their own and can be recharged for another 11 hours from their case. The speakers and microphones have been upgraded for improved sound quality from last year’s model.
The Plus model costs $150, up $20 from the original and comes in four colors: black, white, blue and red.
