Google is shining a spotlight on 2020 International Women’s Day with an animated Doodle that shows women across generations from around the world coming together.
The multilayered animation, illustrated by Oslo- and London-based artists Julie Wilkinson and Joyanne Horscrof and animated by Zurich-based guest animators Marion Willam and Daphne Abderhalden, blends women from the late 1800s through the 1930s (the labor movement), the 1950s-1980s (when gender equality made big strides), and the 1990s through today.
The Doodle, says Google, “pays tribute to breaking barriers from former cultural and gender roles, as women continue to question, reclaim, and redefine ideas about the roles women take on in society.”
As part of its observance of the day, Google is also offering a list of search data as it applies to women. Among the highlights:
- Search interest in “songs about girl power” reached an all-time high in the U.S.
- Search interest in “women’s empowerment” increased by over 330% since 2004 in the U.S.
- Search interest in “women in tech” has increased by over 860% since 2004 in the U.S.
Google also highlighted the most searched for women in a variety of categories, including music (Taylor Swift), athletes (Serena Williams), and comedians (Awkwafina).
The Doodle is usually reserved for celebrities or people who might be lesser known, but whose contributions to society were notable. Google also uses it to showcase notable events like IWD, which this year falls on Sunday, March 8.
