The government is picking up the pace when it comes to mailing out overdue $1,400 stimulus checks.
The relevant agencies—the Treasury Department, IRS, and Bureau of the Fiscal Service—revealed Wednesday that another 2.3 million payments are now on the way. The agencies sent out the checks over the past two weeks. The latest figure exceeds the round of 1.8 million payments most recently sent to Americans.
This new round brings the total number of checks in the present batch of stimulus payments to more than 169 million. Since March 12, when the first checks went out, the government has sent out approximately $395 billion in stimulus payments.
As with previous batches of payments, this round will fold in supplemental payments for people who recently filed their 2020 taxes and reported a change in income level, earning them a bigger stimulus check. Approximately 1.1 million people will see these so-called plus-up payments this time around; year to date, the IRS has made over 8 million of those plus-up payments.
Half of the checks sent were deposited electronically. The remainder are being sent as paper checks.
Still waiting on a check? Unfortunately, calling the IRS won’t do any good. The best way to track this third stimulus payment remains via the “Get My Payment” portal on the IRS.gov website.
These stimulus payments are a part of the $1.9 trillion package signed into law by President Joe Biden in March. Single filers earning up to $75,000 are eligible for $1,400, while couples filing jointly earning up to $150,000 can get $2,800. No payments are being sent to single filers earning more than $80,000, or couples earning jointly more than $160,000. Income was based on the adjusted gross income (AGI) of your most recent tax filing.
The IRS will continue making “economic impact payments” on a weekly basis, it says. This seems likely to be the last round of stimulus checks, after talk of a fourth round was downplayed by White House officials recently.
