If fans of the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams are hoping to attend this Sunday’s Super Bowl LVI in person, they’re going to have to pay up.
The average ticket price for the biggest sporting event of the year currently stands between $9,000 and $9,200, according to data accumulated by TicketIQ, an event ticket search engine and aggregator.
That’s the second-highest average price of a Super Bowl ticket on record, according to the company, just below the $9,723 average it cost to attend 2015’s matchup between Tom Brady’s New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.
The extreme cost of this year’s big game has generated outrage online from fans and football stars alike. In a tweet that has amassed more than 70,000 likes and 10,000 retweets, former NFL star Chad Johnson shared a seat map with ticket prices for Super Bowl LVI.
“Can someone explain how the diehard fans of these teams are supposed to support their team & attend the game?” Johnson wrote.
The cheapest tickets on the map Johnson shared cost more than $5,000. Although it is unclear where the map he is referencing came from, according to TicketIQ data, the cheapest ticket prices to the big game were $5,300 as of Feb. 6.
Johnson did not immediately respond to Coins2Day’ s request for comment.
Johnson played 11 seasons as a wide receiver in the NFL, all but one of which were spent in a Cincinnati Bengals uniform. The six-time Pro Bowler was known for his colorful personality throughout his career. Johnson, who wore the number 85, legally changed his surname to Ochocinco in 2008 before changing it back to Johnson in 2012. Ochocinco was a reference to the Spanish words for eight and five.
More than 70,000 people are expected to attend this Sunday’s Super Bowl game at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. It’s the first time since the pandemic began that the Super Bowl will be at full-capacity fan attendance. Last year, the game was attended by roughly 25,000 people because of coronavirus restrictions.
For fans who are (understandably) unable to drop the more than $5,000 it’ll take to attend the big game this year, don’t worry: There are plenty of ways to watch from the comfort of your home.
