Hollywood’s 2022 award season is turning out to be one the industry would rather forget.

Just as the tsunami of memes and discussions over “the slap” slows down, the Golden Raspberry Awards (a.k.a. The Razzie Awards) has announced it will rescind the “worst performance” award it bestowed upon Bruce Willis last month, following the news the actor is suffering from aphasia.

“After much thought and consideration, the Razzies have made the decision to rescind the Razzie Award given to Bruce Willis, due to his recently disclosed diagnosis,” John Wilson and Mo Murphy, cofounders of the Razzies, said in a statement. “If someone’s medical condition is a factor in their decision making and/or their performance, we acknowledge that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie.”

The Razzies are the anti-Oscars, acknowledging the worst cinematic performances of the year, generally with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Willis, who has been in a string of critically panned movies of late, received his own category this year, with eight nominations.

Earlier this week, Willis’s family issued a statement that the Die Hard and Sixth Sense star would be “stepping away” from acting after being diagnosed with the cognitive condition that impacts people’s ability to understand and express speech.

Earlier this year, the Razzies rescinded a 1980 nomination for Shelley Duvall in The Shining, after news came out about how the actress was treated by director Stanley Kubrick during the film.

“We don’t like to pick on people,” Murphy said at the time.
