Ford is warning owners of some 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs that the engines in their vehicles could catch fire—even when they’re turned off.
The automaker has issued a recall of 39,000 of the vehicles and is urging owners to park in the driveway, rather than the garage, due to the risk. Ford says it doesn’t know what’s causing the fires to occur at this time, and is still determining what remedy is necessary.
To date, 16 fires have been reported and one person was burned as a result. The fires, Ford says, appear to start at the back of the engine on the passenger side. The company is not asking owners to stop driving the SUVs, but is considering the recall an urgent one.
The fires, says Ford, appear to be limited to SUVs built between Dec. 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021.
In a separate recall, Ford is also alerting owners of more than 310,000 2016 Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550s that their air bags might not deploy as intended.
Dust can get into the air bag wiring in the steering wheel, disconnecting the electricity, the company said. Dealers will replace steering wheel wiring as part of the recall. Owners will be notified by mail starting July 5.
Ford’s pair of recalls follows a big Tesla recall last month, where 48,184 Model 3s in the U.S. And 14,684 of the cars in China, noting drivers may be unable to tell if they’re driving in miles per hour or kilometers per hour due to the software error
