Artificial intelligence is poised to be among the most revolutionary advancements of our era—provided its advantages extend past corporations possessing the largest financial resources and the most sophisticated technical know-how. This very principle motivated my decision to join Anthropic, a public benefit corporation dedicated to the ethical advancement of AI for the enduring good of humankind.

TL;DR

  • AI's revolutionary potential hinges on equitable access beyond large corporations.
  • Nonprofits face challenges implementing AI due to workload and risk concerns.
  • AI can significantly reduce workload for nonprofits in areas like fundraising and communication.
  • Anthropic's AI Fluency for Nonprofits program offers tailored training and resources.

This conviction is currently facing scrutiny. Artificial intelligence is speeding up investigations, transforming sectors, and generating immense worth. However, for the entities tackling some of humanity's most difficult challenges—charitable groups combating starvation, broadening healthcare availability, instructing disadvantaged pupils—this advanced capability is still mostly inaccessible.

It's not due to a lack of desire. Throughout our discussions with charitable organizations, a recurring theme emerged: small groups recognize AI's potential benefits, but acquiring the skills to implement it consistently falls to the end of an overwhelming workload. Furthermore, when they contemplate integration, the risks appear substantial, given that these entities support at-risk communities and manage confidential information. Errors are simply not an option for them.

On Giving Tuesday, a day set aside for worldwide benevolence, it's pertinent to consider what restoring these nonprofit organizations' capabilities would signify.

The capacity is considerable. Artificial intelligence possesses the ability to compose proposal stories, condense program statistics into outcome declarations, and tailor wording to align with funder requirements, thereby reducing 100 hours of labor to 20. Teams involved in development can streamline donor categorization, create customized correspondence, and pinpoint individuals likely to make substantial contributions. Entities can more rapidly connect individuals with suitable services and allow personnel to dedicate more attention to interpersonal relationships and less to operational overhead.

Over the past year, we’ve worked with almost 100 organizations to build a new AI program for nonprofits. Today, the Epilepsy Foundation is providing 24/7 support through Claude to 3.4 million Americans living with epilepsy. The International Rescue Committee is using Claude to communicate more effectively with local partners in time-sensitive humanitarian settings. Robin Hood is using Claude for coding and administrative work that would otherwise require significantly more resources.

Our collaborations with these entities have influenced our understanding of what truly beneficial AI entails. Personnel require training modules that can be finished in short, 15-minute segments, featuring illustrations from their daily tasks and continuous assistance, rather than a static guide. AI must seamlessly blend with the existing systems and workflows that organizations currently employ. These observations guided the development of AI Fluency for Nonprofits, a complimentary educational program on Anthropic Academy, tailored for industry-specific operational procedures and limitations. Furthermore, they influenced our commitment to assisting in the creation of three new connectors for charitable organizations' resources.

Ensuring AI is both reliable and easy to use involves more than just making it obtainable. It necessitates an in-depth comprehension of mission-focused entities from their internal perspective and tailoring our instruments to their actual circumstances. This process commences with attentive listening prior to development.

For Anthropic, this endeavor is fundamental to our purpose as a public benefit corporation. However, it also supports our wider efforts in AI advancement. The insights gained from implementing AI with entities assisting underserved communities—insights concerning privacy, confidence, and ethical application—shape our strategy for deployment across all sectors.

This is a crucial juncture to guarantee these entities aren't overlooked—and to draw lessons from their precedent as we define how AI benefits society.
