Andy, you have a tough job as CEO of Diebold. You are based in your headquarters in Canton, Ohio, but most of your other employees are far away from that headquarters. Why did you allow this kind of situation to develop? In the 21st century, people don't move to corporate headquarters anymore. You have to provide an environment, especially if you're a midsize company. where we can embrace talent wherever it exists, wherever people want to contribute to our organization and give them a platform to work from there. Our customers are the largest financial institutions They're all over the map. The important thing is not where does the leadership team reside. The important thing is, how open of a level of communication do you have amongst the leadership, and do you make time for that communication? How do you effectively lead in a situation like that? We're extremely virtual, We're on weekly calls with the management team, we've got video conferencing going, we get ahold of each other basically 24- 7. I can drum up my management team at any given point in time, with a 30 minute notice. To discuss whatever we need to discuss. You know when people talk about leadership, they always talk about the corporate culture, you have a lot of different cultures going on in your company, because you have some of your employees on the east coast, some are on the west coast, some our in Canton, Ohio and some of them are in Asia. And soon, do you have people who are gonna be in Germany as well, how do you make all of these cultures work together, as a leader? I grew up in Germany. There is a great term in the German language. It's called [ FOREIGN ] the culture to argue and to debate with each other. To be tough on a topic, but never ever make it personal. And we've worked really hard to develop that culture of debating topics openly in our company. Anybody in the leadership team can take a contrarian view on just about anything that we discuss, to make sure that we come to the best outcome. To the best. Results for the organization, and it's amazing how that gels a team together. Andy, you've worked at many different places in your career. You were at Siemens of Germany for many years, then you went to Hewlett- Packard. Along the way, what would you say was the best advice that you got on leadership? One of my old bosses told me very early that if you stare at numbers long enough, They will confess the truth. If you really look at the numbers and you try to connect the dots between the numbers, it cuts through a lot of noise, it cuts through a lot of conversation, and it grounds a leadership team in reality. And you may not like the fact pattern, but once you have it, Then you can deal with it. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]

How to Successfully Lead a Geographically Dispersed Company

Andy I want to talk to you a little bit about the macro economic situation. It's been a really bumpy start to 2016 there's been market volatility weak earnings that have been coming out disappointing numbers about the economy. What is your view of how this impacts your business? The market is doing what the market is doing. Now people aren't spending money hand over fist, but by the same token, rational business cases. The whole idea of branch automation, the whole idea of providing superior customer service, at a great level of security, at a lower price point, that has not changed, and it will not change going forward. And if I take a look at my sales pipeline right now, it's pretty encouraging. We look at your stock and it's been falling and you've got a lot of good company. Pretty much everybody's stock is falling but still, how does that impact some of the decisions that you are going to be making in 2016. Whether it's about spending, investing for the future, or hiring? You want to be prudent with what you are doing. But you don't want the day to day stock performance override your managerial decisions. Our objective is to run a good book of business, to provide a long term runway for the company, to grow our company into a very successful future to transform our business, and to do all of that in a very frugal and a very nimble way. You know the Wall Street Journal recently did a survey of economists, and 17 % of them are predicting a recession. And that's the highest number in many years. How are you preparing for a possible downturn, if it happens? What you want to make sure, is that You don't spend money that you don't have, so we don't want to go trigger happy. We're not gonna do a built it and they will come. We will make sure, just like we're going to make sure in the acquisition of [ UNKNOWN ] that we'll yield the savings and then we'll invest in the areas that are most transformative and have the highest yields. So is there anything on your worry list? Well the performance of the financial sector as they are our largest customer, are a key bell weather to our business. So when we had a rate hike in the end of last year as small as it was, there actually positive momentum especially for the banks here in the U. S. especially the regional banks. So, financial systems, how they perform, that's probably the biggest thing we monitor for our business outlook. So, how concerned are you that the Federal Reserve may continue its plan of raising interest rates, even if it's a gradual rise, in this particular environment. See, for us, that's goodness. Because it increases the spread for the banks, and if the banks make a little bit more money, they're more willing to invest. So we're actually on the other side of that equation, a rate hike would be a clear. Positive movement for our business environment. Fast forward to next year at this time. What will we be saying about the US economy and about the business environment? I think the US economy, once again, will have proven that it's very resilient, it's going to be quite a rollercoaster year, but I think net Would have a slight increase year over year. How This CEO Plans to Succeed in 2016

Andy, you're soon gonna close on a very big deal, that you are acquiring a German ATM company. Why is this so important for your company? It's the biggest deal in the 156 year history of Diebold. We're basically doubling our business. We're combining a company, as the market lead in the Americas, Diebold, With the company that has a leading position in Emia, Wincor Nixdorf. And it's going to create a power house in our industry. It's going to create a great partner for our customers who are transforming themselves and who want a strong partner To help them and lead them through that transformation. Well, you know, when you do look at the numbers, you are just about doubling your revenues and this would bump up Diebold into the Fortune 500, so does this size give you more of an advantage over your arch rival NCR? Look, you've got to grow your business. You have to make sure that you get a bigger, better seat at the table. Our customers is the who's who in the banking world around the globe. They want a strong, viable partner that helps them through the transformation that they are going through. And this acquisition just gives us that springboard. To be such a much better partner for them. You talk about your customers being the biggest banks. But we also know that those very customers are reducing their number of branches. We know that millennials are doing most of their banking on their cellphones. So make a case for, how do ATMs fit in this new digital economy we're in? Think about it this way. It's not your cash and dash type of ATM. It's a machine that does about 90 % what the human teller can perform today. It's a machine that can connect the physical worlds of cash with the digital worlds of cash. It's a machine where you can put money into the system just as easily as you take money out of the system. And of all groups in our country that has the highest usage of cash, believe it or not, it's the Millennials. So what impact do things like Apple Pay and Google Wallet have on people? They're actually a great ecosystem enhancer for us. It gives a great opportunity to drive new innovations. This weekend, there's gonna be the national retail show here in New York city where we showcasing a new application. We can actually go shopping as a retail consumer in your store in the digital app of that store. You take a picture of the merchandise, you go to the checkout counter and you just press a button And you're done. You've paid. So you combine these technologies, the technical term that's used in the industry is called omnichannel, connecting all different types of payments. It's a software play. It's a services play, and it's a huge opportunity for Diebold. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
