The German shipping and container company made substantial gains in 2022, reporting a 38% annual increase in revenue to $36.3 billion. Profit soared 66.9% to $17.9 billion due to strong transport demand, high freight rates and currency effects.

In October 2022 it acquired a 100% stake, worth approximately $1 billion, in Chile-based terminal operator SM SAAM S.A. cementing its portfolio in Latin America. Around the same time, it bought a 49% stake in Italian terminal and transport operator Spinelli Group, bolstering its position in Europe.</li>
